MAGMA_CUBE_BOSS_100The Magma Cube Boss (Commonly known as Magma Boss) was a BOSS found in the Magma Fields in the Blazing Fortress.
Spawning
[edit | edit source]The Magma Cube Boss spawned every 2 hours. The spawn time was identical in every server (a timer could be found here but the boss was revamped and now spawns every 5 minutes) (Warning timer is inaccurate as people will often report incorrect spawn and death times, the temperature mechanic was much more accurate.)
Temperature used to be a game mechanic contained in the Blazing Fortress to indicate when the boss would spawn. You could use the temperature (underneath the server info in the tab menu) to check what the current temperature was. All possible temperatures and times before spawn are described as follows:
- Warm: Less than 1 hour before the boss spawned.
- Tempered: Less than 20 minutes before the boss spawned.
- Hot: Less than 10 minutes before the boss spawned.
- Scolding[sic]: Less than 2 minutes before the boss spawn.
- Volcanic: The boss has spawned and lasted until it becomes Warm again at the 1 hour mark. If you joined a server and it says Volcanic more likely than not you missed the boss spawn and had to wait 1-2 hour(s) until the next spawn.
Prior to spawning, lava flowed down from the mountain towards the valley of the boss arena. The closer the lava is to the ground, the sooner the boss would spawn.
In addition to the lava flow, a wave of Blazes spawned 20 minutes prior to the boss spawning. When the timer reaches 10 minutes to spawn, a wave of Magma Cubes spawned. 2 minutes prior to the boss spawning, the Music Disc "13" could be heard by players in the arena.
Prior to the balance update that gave the Magma Cube Boss a damage cap, If the first boss in a server was killed too quickly, there was a chance that a second and even third boss could spawn immediately.
Drops
[edit | edit source]Each player that dealt damage to the Magma Cube Boss would have their own drops (that are only visible to them) depending on what place they received in damage dealt, similar to the Ender Dragon fight. The higher they placed, the greater the chance of getting more or rarer drops.
Total Loot Quality was calculated using this formula:
| Condition | Base Quality | Additional Loot |
|---|---|---|
| 1st in Damage Dealt | 200 Loot Quality | |
| 2nd in Damage Dealt | 175 Loot Quality | |
| 3rd in Damage Dealt | 150 Loot Quality | |
| 4th in Damage Dealt | 125 Loot Quality | |
| 5th in Damage Dealt | 110 Loot Quality | |
| 6-8th in Damage Dealt | 90 Loot Quality | |
| 9-10th in Damage Dealt | 75 Loot Quality | |
| 11-12th in Damage Dealt | 60 Loot Quality | |
| More than 1 Damage dealt | 50 Loot Quality | |
| Less than 1 Damage dealt | 10 Loot Quality |
Only one unique item could drop if the player had enough quality to qualify. Rest of the quality was used on non-unique drops. The following items could've drop when killed:
| Item | Unique | Quality | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| ✔ | 200 Loot Quality | 2% | |
| ✔ | 150 Loot Quality | 10% | |
| ✔ | 130 Loot Quality | 35% | |
| ✕ | 50 Loot Quality | 100% | |
| ✕ | 25 Loot Quality | 100% | |
| ✕ | 5 Loot Quality | 100% |
Ember Rod (Removed after 0.7.8)
Behavior
[edit | edit source]The Magma Boss targets and attacks nearby players, jumping to reach them and dealing heavy damage on contact. In addition, it can shoot fireballs, igniting and damaging players it hits.
The boss does not follow invincibility frames, similar to the Ender Dragon. It also bypasses protection from the
Skeleton's Helmet.
Any damage it receives above 2,000 is reduced to 2,000 + 10% of the additional damage.
When the boss dies, it turns the ground beneath it into yellow hardened clay, and a beacon shows its location of death. The boss's drops spawn in the vicinity of the beacon.
Strategy
[edit | edit source]Many players should work together to efficiently defeat the boss. Since the player has a higher chance of receiving rare drops if they deal more damage than other players, many players attempt to maximize their DPS.
Another way of damaging the boss for lesser amounts of damage dealt to the player is to shoot with a bow. This will keep the player safe from the Boss's attacks but will also deal less damage than a melee weapon. Using a more powerful bow, such as
Runaan's Bow, would yield more damage dealt. As well as the Runaan's Bow, a Hurricane Bow was also good because of the multiple arrows being able to hit the boss at once. However, now you need late-game bows such as the Juju Shortbow and Terminator.
Using a melee weapon is a much riskier strategy of damaging the boss. The Magma Cube Boss would deal substantial damage to those players standing within melee range. Players were not advised to undertake this strategy unless they had very effective armor.
Using Potions also could significantly increase the amount of damage a player deals. For instance,
Critical Potion can increase the player's critical damage and
Archery Potion can be used to increase ranged damage.
When the boss died, each player gets separate drops, although only one player will get the
Magma Cube Pet. If a player quits the lobby or exits the game when the items are dropped, they will not receive the items.
Note that
Arrows often bounce off the Magma Boss due to Minecraft mechanics.
As the Magma Cube Boss is a
Magma Cube, the
Slime Bow does 5x damage against it, meaning that it was possible to kill a Magma Boss in the first and only hit on it. It no longer works in its first phase.
Indicators
[edit | edit source]- Some servers did not have lava flowing correctly.
- Some servers did not spawn the wave of blaze or magma cubes like they should.
- The music disc could only be heard by a few players, due to a bug.
Spawning
[edit | edit source]- Some servers did not spawn the magma boss when they should. This was intended to be fixed in update 0.7, but it still affects certain servers.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The Magma Boss was the first boss to be added, and the first to be revamped from an early-game boss to a late-game boss.
- As of one of the newer updates, the Skeleton's Helmet would not work on the boss. All bosses on the Crimson Isle bypass the Monster Hunter Armor set.
- The Ember Rod used to be a drop from the Magma Cube Boss, but was later removed, most likely because of other weapons outclassing it.
- Contrary to popular belief, you were not required to land the killing blow to have the Magma Cube Boss count toward your Bestiary.
