Potions

Potion Effects are effects that grants the player positive effects and stat boosts (known as Buffs) or negative effects and stats (known as Debuffs).

Potions are consumable liquids which are brewed in Brewing Stands. They grant Potion Effects when consumed.

Brewing

[edit | edit source]

A Brewing Stand Brewing Stand is required to make potions, and it can be bought from the A sprite icon representing Alchemist in Hypixel SkyBlock Alchemist for 30 Coins each, or crafted with Cobblestone 3 Cobblestone and Blaze Rod 1 Blaze Rod.

Potion brewing is similar to vanilla brewing, with Nether Wart Nether Wart turning water bottles to Awkward Potion Awkward Potions, Glowstone Dust Glowstone Dust increasing its potency, and Redstone Dust Redstone Dust increasing its length. However, unlike vanilla Minecraft, Glowstone and Redstone Dust can be stacked on each other (but only one of each kind)

There are some notable differences to how brewing works in SkyBlock, such as:

  • Brewing does not require Blaze Powder Blaze Powder (unlike vanilla 1.8).
  • The brewing stand uses a custom UI, and players can hover over the colored panels to see time remaining (20s total).
  • Potion duration is affected by the brewer's  Alchemy Level.
  • Enchanted items will result in stronger and/or longer potions.

Potions are brewed by placing bottles in the lower slots and an ingredient in the upper slot. When a potion is brewing, the glass panes in the middle will flash orange and yellow. After 20 seconds, the potion will finish brewing.

Most potions last 3 minutes, which is increased by  Alchemy level and adding Redstone. The default level of the potions depends on the base ingredient; enchanted forms give a higher base level.

Base Potions

[edit | edit source]
Icon Potion Obtained through Usage
Water Bottle Water Bottle Water (source) No effect when drunk, used to make awkward potions and weakness potions
Awkward Potion Awkward Potion Nether Wart No effect when drunk, used for other potions
Cheap CoffeeTepid Green TeaPulpous Orange JuiceBitter Iced TeaKnockOff™ ColaDecent CoffeeViking's Tear Brews Purchased from Bartender

Brews can replace the Awkward Potion as a base in some potions to boost a specific stat of the potion. These boosts work only on potions that already have the stat or are specified for use, and any percentage boost is to the potion's stats, not the player's. Brews can be bought from Bartender, the Melancholic Viking and Shifty.

Modifiers

[edit | edit source]

After creating potions, players can add certain items to boost or alter their effect. All modifier types can be used together, but only one of each type will take effect (no stacking).

Possible modifiers are:

  1. Level Modifier (Glowstone Dust Glowstone) - increases the effectiveness/level of the potion. Not all potions have the same max level.
  2. Duration Modifier (Redstone Dust Redstone Dust) - increases the base duration of the potion effect by a specific value (applied before increases due to player's alchemy level).
  3. Splash Modifier (Gunpowder Gunpowder) - turns the potion into a splash potion, allowing it to be thrown.

Some modifiers require a specific order to avoid issues:

  • Enchanted Gunpowder Enchanted Gunpowder must be added after a duration modifier - applying it before will not activate its special effect, thus removing any benefit from using the Enchanted Gunpowder instead of normal Gunpowder.
  • If using both the Enchanted Redstone Block Enchanted Redstone Block and Enchanted Redstone Lamp Enchanted Redstone Lamp (but only for level increase, due to it's cheaper price), the Enchanted Redstone Block must be added first; doing it in the reverse will cause no extra effect. This is because the Lamp will fill both the duration and modifier slots once use, preventing a second modifier to be applied - but applying the duration modifier first allows the Lamp to only fill up the available level modifier.

Potions and Effects

[edit | edit source]

Potions give time-limited Buffs (positive effects and stat boosts) or Debuffs (negative effects and stats) when used. Potions do not stack. Using a potion will set the timer/potency of that effect, to what you consumed. The only exception to this, is the God Potion God Potion, which takes precedence over all other Buff effects, and cannot be altered by taking a different length/strength Buff potion.

The God Potion grants all Buffs to players for between 12 and 24 hours depending on their  Alchemy level.

Entering a Dungeon pauses and stores all existing potion effects the player has. The player can then receive potion buffs separately within Dungeons; however, only 1 potion may be consumed or splashed per run.

Potion Rarity

[edit | edit source]

A potion's rarity is determined by its potion level.

Skill XP Boost Potions

[edit | edit source]

These Potions can be obtained from Gifts. Each of these Potions' base attributes give 5 Wisdom for 12 minutes at Level I, 10 Wisdom for 24 minutes at Level II, and 20 Wisdom for 36 minutes at Level III.

Attempting to modify 1-3 Skill XP Boost Potions on their own will result in the Brewing Stand not activating. At least one unmodified non-XP Boost Potion must also be on the brewing stand for modifiers to apply.

Redstone and Enchanted Redstone Dust will not affect Skill XP Boost Potions, and might also then restrict the usage of an Enchanted Redstone Lamp[Confirm].

Glowstone will increment an unmodified Skill XP Boost Potion's level by 1 (up to a maximum of level III), but will not affect the Potion's duration. Enchanted Glowstone will increment an unmodified Skill XP Boost Potion's level by 2 (up to a maximum of Level III), but will not affect the Potion's duration.

An Enchanted Redstone Lamp will change an unmodified Skill XP Boost Potion in the following ways: The Potion's level will be increased to/kept at III with a 20 Wisdom boost effect. The Potion's duration will be set to 36 minutes plus the brewer's Alchemy level bonus.

Alchemy Experience

[edit | edit source]

Brewing potions grants  Alchemy XP. The base item used to brew a potion determines the amount of  Alchemy XP which will be earned once the potion is removed from its Brewing Stand Brewing Stand.

Only the first ingredient after the Awkward Potion Awkward Potion affects brewing leveling XP. In some cases, players can get a tier V potion that is not in the recipe book by adding Enchanted Glowstone Enchanted Glowstone to a Tier III potion, provided that the Tier V version can be made without modifiers. Although the result will be a Tier V potion, only the Tier III XP reward will be awarded.

The Cost-Effectiveness of a potion is calculated using the ingredient's purchasing price. If there is no purchasing price available, the material price will be used instead. If there is neither, then the theoretical purchasing price used for calculation is 2.5x the selling price.

Splashes

[edit | edit source]

Splashes were player-hosted events where someone used splash potions to give multiple people effects at once at a fraction of the cost-per-person.

Typically, a splasher would gather between 20 and 30 people in a party, and charge each person according to the types of potions; a full suite of positive effects would cost 90k Coins, while more specific effects may cost less. After the party reached capacity, the splasher would warp everyone to an empty lobby and splash all the potions on them. This allowed the splasher to take a profit from brewing potions, while providing positive effects to individuals at a fraction of the cost.

With the 0.9 Community Center Update, these have decreased in popularity heavily due to the addition of the God Potion which can provide all these potion effects at a more efficient cost. However, it is still common for players to splash themselves and their teammates with a potion at the beginning of a Dungeon, since their God Potion would be paused and inactive.
